What a pretentious piece of shit. I speak, of course, of Killer Joe (written by Tracy Letts and directed by Lee Sankowich), a play currently running at the Magic Theater in Fort Mason. I'd had appointments with my lawyer followed by a haircut and was thinking about grabbing dinner. I called ChP to see if she was home from work, etc. She mentioned that she'd been talking with her friend AG about a play that she'd heard so much about. The little man was jumping out of his chair...it had to be great. Wanna go? Hmmm. Drive to the marina, maybe grab something to eat...starving...get to meet ChP's friend AG. OK.
Got to ChP's place and the two of us walked over to Fort Mason. We didn't have time to stop at Greens for dinner (or anywhere for that matter) and I was feeling it. We met with AG and headed to our seats. I'd grabbed a chocolate peanut-butter cookie and that was all I was gonna have for dinner. The sugar fucked with me on an empty stomach. In the darkened theater we chatted before the curtain rose. AG gave me the "girlfriend quiz". When are you divorced? Ever have an STD? Have a girlfriend? Stuff like this. Fine. My blood sugar level is pretty low and I know I'm gonna forget about half of this anyway. Shhh. The play's about to begin.
Loud knocking from outside a door. A woman, a nude woman, appears and opens the door. The guy enters, disgusted at seeing his step mother nude. Pretty heavy bush I notice. The family is a bunch of inbreeds. Nudity, inbreeds and a mildly retarded daughter character. Promising start I think, but it all goes downhill from there. Male nudity, dramatic "acting", inane dialog and silly plot twists. Thank god I get to catch a few zzz's here and there. The most realistic aspect of the play was that I could easily imagine the actors to be inbreeds in real life.
After the play, as we head to AG's car, I am not shy with my review. I mention Sam Shepard (who I'd worked with back in the day) and Stanislavsly so that I appear as pretentious as the play we'd just seen. I'm a big believer in Thematic Unity I think as I expound on the turd we'd just been exposed to. The cold air wakes me up and I get my second wind as we head back to ChP's. I'm gonna need it.
